The Urban Development Department has greenlit the Namma Metro Phase 3A project, connecting Hebbal to Bengaluru's tech hub in Sarjapur over a 37-kilometer route. Pending Union Cabinet funding approval, the project's cost has risen from INR 16,500 crore to INR 27,000 crore following a detailed project report (DPR) assessment. This line will feature 28 stations with both elevated and underground sections, providing vital links through areas like Koramangala, KR Circle, and Hebbal. Additionally, the BMRCL plans a sports and cultural complex above the Shivajinagar Metro station, inspired by international metro designs. With Phase 3A's approval, Bengaluru's infrastructure will see enhanced connectivity, easing traffic congestion and boosting urban development.
In a significant advancement, the Urban Development Department of the Government of India has approved the Namma Metro Phase 3A project, which will connect Hebbal to the Tech Hub in Sarjapur, spanning a distance of 37 kilometres. The next step involves the Union Cabinet's review of the detailed project report (DPR) to make funding decisions. Initially budgeted at approximately INR 16,500 crore for 2022-23, the estimated cost has now escalated to INR 27,000 crore following the DPR assessment.
Earlier last year, the Union Cabinet had already sanctioned the larger Metro Phase 3 project. With the recent approval from the urban development department, officials assert that this marks the first central government endorsement for a project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) submitted the DPR to the state government, which subsequently forwarded it for central approval.
According to the DPR, the project will comprise 28 stations, featuring both underground and elevated sections. The elevated route will extend from Sarjapur to Koramangala 3rd Block, incorporating 15 stations, while the underground section will connect the 3rd Block to the Veterinary College with 11 stations. Elevated stations are also planned for Ganga Nagar and Hebbal. Discussions have reportedly taken place between the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the city development department regarding the underground route in Hebbal.
The new route will include stations at Sarjapur, Kada Agrahara Road, Somapura, Dommasandra, Muthanallur Cross, Ambedkar Nagar, Kodathi Gate, Carmelram, Doddakannalli, Kaikondarahalli, Bellandur Gate, Ibbluru, Agara, Jakasandra, Koramangala 3rd Block, Koramangala 2nd Block, Dairy Circle, Nimhans, Shantinagar, Town Hall, KR Circle, Basaveshwara Circle, Bangalore Golf Course, Palace Guttahalli, Mehkri Circle, Veterinary College, Gangannagar, and Hebbal. A depot will also be established in Sarjapur.
The BMRCL has proposed the creation of a sports and cultural complex above the underground Shivajinagar Metro station, taking inspiration from international metro stations. This station is part of the 21-km Metro Pink Line between Nagawara and Kalena Agrahara, with most construction nearing completion. BMRCL officials have identified approximately 2.5 acres of space above the Shivajinagar station for the development of sports and cultural facilities.
Sources indicate that the proposed complex will offer facilities for indoor sports, cricket, football, basketball, and swimming, alongside plans for a large auditorium to host cultural events. In collaboration with the BBMP, BMRCL intends to pursue funding for the project, which is currently in its preliminary stage with the DPR and cost estimates being prepared. The goal is to complete construction within the next two to three years, providing direct access to the Shivajinagar bus station to enhance commuter connectivity.
In conclusion, the approval of Namma Metro Phase 3A marks a pivotal step towards improved transport infrastructure in Bengaluru. By enhancing connectivity and addressing traffic issues, this project is set to play a vital role in the city's future development and urban planning, fostering economic growth and community engagement.
