Motorists travelling to and from Navi Mumbai received significant relief with the opening of the northbound Thane Creek Bridge. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, this bridge is part of a broader project that includes the construction of seven additional bridges along the Coastal Highway, aiming to connect Mumbai with the Maharashtra-Goa state border. Once complete, these bridges are expected to enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve travel times for the region's residents and tourists.
Motorists heading to and from Navi Mumbai will finally experience significant relief as the northbound Thane Creek Bridge opened to the public earlier this month. The bridge was inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also laid the foundation stone for the construction of seven additional bridges along the Coastal Highway, designed to connect Mumbai to the Maharashtra-Goa state border. This ambitious project is being planned and executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
The work on the southbound bridge is reportedly 80% complete. Both bridges, part of the larger Sion-Panvel Highway, will feature three lanes each and are estimated to cost INR 599 crore. They are positioned on either side of the currently used highway and are expected to alleviate congestion at the creek. Once fully operational, these bridges are anticipated to accommodate two lakh vehicles daily. Currently, motorists must rely on either a Ro-Ro ferry or take a detour to cross the creeks along the route, significantly extending travel times in the hinterland.
An MSRDC official indicated that the total length of all seven planned bridges is 26.70 km, with a projected construction cost of INR 7,851 crore. These bridges will be situated at Dharamtar, Kundalika, Agardanda, Bankot, Kelshi, Jaigad, and Kunkeshwar along the Rewas-Redi Coastal Highway. The Chief Minister remarked that the demand for seven bridges along the Coastal Highway has existed since the establishment of the state, and this demand is now being fulfilled as a Diwali gift for the people of Konkan. He further noted that these creek bridges will not only facilitate the development of Konkan but also significantly boost tourism in the region.
The opening of the Thane Creek Bridge marks a pivotal moment for transportation in the Navi Mumbai area, offering a much-needed solution to congestion issues. With further developments planned along the Coastal Highway, the region is poised for economic growth and increased tourism. The commitment to enhancing infrastructure not only improves connectivity but also promises to uplift local communities, making it a significant step towards sustainable development in Konkan.
