Synopsis

Patna was selected under the Central Government's Smart Cities Mission (SCM) in 2017. As part of this developmental initiative, cities on the list are eligible to receive INR 1,000 crore over the period of five years, with funds provided by both the central and state governments. The goal is to develop selected areas within these cities by improving the civic facilities through smart technology and infrastructure. Patna's inclusion in the program was meant to enhance urban living, address key infrastructure challenges, and modernize city services to benefit its residents with improved, tech-driven amenities and a better quality of life.

In Patna, only half of the projects under the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) have been completed over the last seven years. Out of 33 planned projects, 17 have been finished, while 16 are still in progress, according to officials. Around 73% of the funds allocated to the Patna Smart City Limited (PSCL) have been used during this period.

Patna was selected for the Central government's Smart Cities Mission in 2017. This program offers cities INR 1,000 crore over five years from both the central and state governments to develop smart infrastructure and facilities in selected areas. However, the deadline for completing these projects has been extended several times, most recently to March 31, 2025, after requests from state governments and members of Parliament. The PSCL has completed 17 projects at a cost of INR 409.91 crore. These include major initiatives like the Integrated Command and Control Centre, which used INR 288.24 crore. Of the remaining 16 projects, nine are expected to be finished by 2024, with a total cost of INR 320 crore.

Mod Shamshad, the CEO of PSCL, expressed confidence in meeting the extended deadline set by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Among the projects expected to be completed soon are the automation of drainage pumping stations and a multi-level car parking facility worth INR 28.86 crore, both scheduled to be finished by October. Additionally, a foot overbridge near St. Xavier's High School is planned to be completed by the following month.

Other important projects, like the construction of a pedestrian subway, a multimodal transit hub near Patna railway station, and riverfront development, are targeted for completion by December. The PSCL is also working on various infrastructure improvements, such as government school facilities, park landscaping, and air quality enhancement projects through solid waste management, solar rooftops, and e-buses.
