The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is offering a one-time opportunity for defaulters to settle their property tax dues with significant penalty waivers' 85% for December payments and 75% for January. The total outstanding property tax stands at INR 6 billion, including INR 3 billion in penalties. Previous efforts in 2021 saw limited success, but this time, the NMC hopes that reduced penalties will spur higher payments. With a INR 2.50 billion target for the year, the civic body is confident of increased collections. Property tax recovery remains crucial, with confiscation looming for non-compliance.
In a move to encourage timely payment of property taxes, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has revealed an amnesty scheme offering an 85% waiver on penalties for payments made in December and a 75% waiver for those made in January. Currently, the total outstanding property tax stands at approximately INR 6 billion, which includes INR 3 billion in accumulated penalties. The NMC imposes a 2% monthly penalty on unpaid property taxes and recovers costs associated with issuing notices and warrants to defaulters.
NMC officials have emphasised that this is the last opportunity for defaulters to settle their outstanding dues. They warn that failure to do so within the amnesty period may result in property confiscation. A similar scheme implemented in October-November 2021 yielded limited results, with the NMC collecting only INR 140.86 million from 17,560 defaulters during that period, along with a total penalty rebate of INR 5.6 million.
This time, however, the NMC is optimistic about a stronger response. The significant reduction in penalties is expected to motivate defaulters to clear their dues. For the current financial year, the civic body has set a property tax collection target of INR 2.50 billion. As of the end of September, the NMC had collected INR 1.27 billion, slightly surpassing the INR 1.25 billion collected during the same period last year.
Additionally, the 14th RAHSTA Expo, part of the India Construction Festival, is scheduled to take place on October 9 and 10, 2024, at the Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai.
In conclusion, the NMC's current amnesty scheme presents a crucial opportunity for defaulters to settle their property tax dues with substantial penalty reductions' 85% for December payments and 75% for January. With a staggering INR 6 billion tax backlog, including INR 3 billion in penalties, this initiative aims to enhance revenue collection and avert the necessity of property confiscations. While the previous scheme in 2021 saw limited success, the NMC remains hopeful that the revised offer will elicit a stronger response. Defaulters are urged to act swiftly to avoid severe financial and legal repercussions, as the NMC's target of INR 2.50 billion for the year remains a priority.
