Synopsis

One month into the initial operation of Metro 3's Aqua Line, connecting Aarey JVLR to Bandra Kurla Complex, ridership has topped 600,000, with an average of 20,000 daily commuters. The 12.44-km stretch saw its highest ridership on the first Sunday after launch, with 27,108 passengers. Key routes include Bandra Kurla Complex to Marol Naka and SEEPZ to Marol Naka, where intersecting lines have also boosted traffic. Nine trains currently run at 7.30-minute intervals, soon to be reduced to 6.40 minutes if demand holds. Upcoming retail spaces and the National Common Mobility Card launch by December 2024 will enhance commuter convenience further.

One month after the initial phase of Metro 3, spanning from Aarey JVLR to Bandra Kurla Complex, began service, ridership on the line has exceeded the 600,000 mark. Average daily ridership stands around 20,000.

Estimates from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) suggest that the complete 38.5-km Metro 3 corridor, once operational, is expected to serve 1.3 million passengers daily. However, data from MMRC reveals that current ridership on the 12.44-km stretch between Aarey JVLR and Bandra Kurla Complex falls short of this projection. Between early October and early November, the Aqua Line saw 612,983 commuters. According to an MMRC official, the highest single-day ridership was recorded on the first Sunday after commercial operations began, reaching 27,108.

During weekdays, the most popular routes are between Bandra Kurla Complex and Marol Naka, and between SEEPZ and Marol Naka, with Marol Naka emerging as the busiest station. The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro line, which intersects with Metro 3 at Marol Naka, has also experienced an increase of around 4,000 daily passengers.

Currently, MMRC operates nine trains on the Aqua Line, maintaining a gap of 7.30 minutes between services. Officials have stated that if demand remains steady, this interval will be reduced to 6.40 minutes. Over the past two weeks, the corporation has introduced online ticket sales through its website, although the launch of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) has been postponed to December 2024. An MMRC representative indicated that NCMC is in the testing phase and should be available by that time.

MMRC is also in the process of leasing retail spaces across the 10 operational metro stations. Bids have been received, and contracts will be finalised soon. An MMRC official noted that retail stores are expected to be operational within the coming months.

MMRC's phased opening of Metro 3 has seen a steady start, drawing hundreds of thousands of commuters while improving transport links across Mumbai. With further reductions in train intervals planned to enhance capacity, the addition of retail outlets at key stations, and the upcoming launch of the NCMC, Metro 3 is set to improve commuter convenience and support greater mobility options within the city.
