Synopsis

Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) and Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) are set to collaborate on a 3-kilometre underground metro line and station at Nedumbassery, as part of Kochi Metro's Phase-III expansion from Aluva to Angamaly. The proposed underground station will connect directly to the airport, similar to Delhi Metro's Airport Express Line. This extension, which follows National Highway-544 and key local roads, is projected to cost around INR 8,000 crore, with Cial expected to contribute about INR 1,000 crore for the underground section. Approval from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is awaited, with cost-sharing details under review by Cial's board.

Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) and Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) are expected to collaborate on the construction of the proposed underground metro rail line and station at Nedumbassery. KMRL is planning to develop a 3-kilometre underground metro line at Nedumbassery, which will feature an underground station connected to the airport. This initiative is part of the proposed Phase-III expansion, which aims to link Aluva with Angamaly. The planned underground station is akin to the Delhi Metro's Airport Express Line or the Orange Line that runs from New Delhi to Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25, providing access to Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Considering the substantial costs associated with constructing underground rail lines and stations, KMRL has suggested a partnership with Cial for this project. Ongoing discussions between KMRL officials and Cial stakeholders have been described as positive, according to sources.

According to the proposed Phase-III project by Kochi Metro, the extension line is set to commence from Aluva and will run along National Highway-544 until Aleena Valavu near Akaparambu. It will then traverse the Kariyad-Airport-Mattoor road to reach Nedumbassery International Airport. From the airport, the line will continue along Angamaly-Airport road to MC Road, extending on MC Road until Angamaly. At the MC Road junction in Angamaly, the metro line will head towards Thrissur, covering approximately 2 kilometres on NH-544.

A senior official from KMRL indicated that the total construction cost for the Phase-III line is estimated to be around INR 8,000 crore. While the construction of the underground line is costly, there are expectations for Cial to contribute approximately INR 1,000 crore towards the development of the underground structures. The state government will serve as the implementing agency for this project.

KMRL has submitted the project proposal for the Phase-III extension of Kochi Metro to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA), with final approval anticipated soon. Industries Minister P Rajeeve, who is also a director of Cial, mentioned that the Cial board of directors needs to discuss the cost-sharing proposal before any approval can be granted.

The proposed Phase-III extension of Kochi Metro represents a significant step towards enhancing connectivity in the region, particularly with the planned underground line to Nedumbassery International Airport. While the collaboration between KMRL and Cial is promising, concerns regarding project profitability and the need for direct railway links remain paramount. Stakeholders advocate for prioritising the development of the surrounding area to ensure a steady flow of passengers. As discussions progress, the successful implementation of this project will depend on a balanced approach that considers both infrastructure investment and regional growth.
