A new bridge will replace the unsafe Irla Nullah structure near the Juhu Vile Parle Development (JVPD) scheme in Mumbai, significantly improving local infrastructure and traffic flow. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will oversee the construction, as the old bridge was deemed unsafe and unsuitable for repairs earlier in 2022. The estimated cost of the project is INR 10.24 crore. A civic official from the BMC's bridges department noted that, despite the bridge being declared unsafe, it could not be fully closed due to its status as the sole route linking Moragaon and the JVPD area. Consequently, temporary measures were implemented to ensure continued access.
Work on the new bridge is expected to commence as soon as the BMC secures a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for traffic diversion from the Mumbai Traffic Police. According to a civic official, the project should not cause significant traffic disruptions, as the construction will proceed in phases, with one lane closed at a time. Traffic can also be redirected via a road behind Chandan Cinema near the PVR multiplex.
The project has a 15-month timeline, and the contract has been awarded to M/s Samruddhi Enterprises. The existing bridge spans 22 metres, matching the width of the nullah below, and the new structure will retain these dimensions. This new bridge will benefit residents of Moragaon, Juhu, and surrounding areas by providing improved connectivity.
Furthermore, the Irla Nullah bridge is a critical component of the Bandra-Versova section of the Mumbai Coastal Road project, which is currently underway. It will serve as one of the main feeder routes, enhancing connectivity, particularly if a Development Plan Road near Ritumbara College in JVPD is constructed. This addition could further alleviate traffic congestion at the JVPD junction, as explained by the civic official.
Notably, utilities and a water main are located beneath the existing bridge, which was constructed prior to the BRIMSTOWAD project. The new bridge will be elevated to prevent interference from floodwaters during the monsoon season, ensuring reliability and safety for all users.
