Varanasi is set to welcome its second rail-road bridge connecting Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction with the city, marking a significant infrastructure upgrade. The INR 2,642 crore project, announced by the government, will feature four railway tracks and six road lanes, making it India's largest bridge by capacity. The bridge, expected to be completed in four years, will alleviate congestion on the heavily saturated Varanasi-DDU route and replace the aging Malviya Bridge. This new structure aims to boost connectivity for pilgrims and tourists, while also creating employment and business opportunities, driving socio-economic growth in the region.
Varanasi is set to welcome its second rail-road bridge connecting Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya with the holy city, as announced by the government earlier this week. Once completed, it will be the largest in India in terms of capacity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who represents Varanasi in the Lok Sabha, highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring comfort and convenience for the people of Kashi. He mentioned that the approved rail-road bridge over the Ganga would not only enhance connectivity for pilgrims and tourists but also create new opportunities for employment and business.
Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared details about the Cabinet's decision, stating that the new bridge will be constructed at a cost of INR 2,642 crore. He noted that the project is anticipated to be completed within four years, with the Railway likely to execute the work.
The new bridge will feature four tracks for railway traffic and six lanes for road vehicles, running parallel to the existing Malviya Bridge. This bridge plays a crucial role in connecting the Northern, Eastern, and Western states. The existing rail-cum-road bridge, which has two railway lines and two road lanes, is approximately 137 years old. The route between Varanasi and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya is currently over-saturated at 163 per cent, necessitating the replacement of the Malviya Bridge, as stated by the government.
The proposed multi-tracking project aims to ease operations and alleviate congestion, contributing significantly to the infrastructural development of one of the busiest sections across Indian Railways. The project will traverse through Varanasi and Chandauli districts in Uttar Pradesh.
The Varanasi-DDU Junction route experiences heavy congestion, primarily due to its essential role in transporting goods such as coal, cement, and food grains, as well as catering to growing tourism and industrial demands. To tackle this issue, upgrades to infrastructure are deemed necessary, including the construction of a new rail-cum-road bridge over the Ganga River and the addition of third and fourth railway lines. These enhancements are expected to support the socio-economic growth of the region.
