The Union Cabinet has approved a new 309 km rail line connecting Indore and Manmad. This project will cost over INR 18,000 crore. It will create the shortest rail route between Mumbai and Indore. The rail line will pass through six districts in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The project is expected to be completed in seven to eight years, i.e. it will be completed by 2027. The project will introduce 30 new stations and benefit about 30 lakh people. It aims to improve connectivity, increase freight traffic, and promote tourism in the region.
The Union Cabinet has greenlit a major infrastructure project to improve rail connectivity between Mumbai and Indore. The new 309 km rail line will cost over INR 18,000 crore. It is designed to provide the shortest route between these two commercial hubs.
The new rail line will pass through two districts in Maharashtra-Nashik and Dhule-and four districts in Madhya Pradesh-Barwani, Khargone, Dhar, and Indore. It will provide direct connectivity between Indore and Manmad. This project is expected to improve mobility and efficiency for Indian Railways. Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said the project is part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on multi-modal connectivity.
Currently, trains to Indore pass through Surat or Bhopal, covering 850 to 900 km. The new rail line will reduce this distance by over 300 km, making it the shortest route between Mumbai and Indore. This will save time for passengers and speed up the movement of goods. It will benefit industries in both states.
The new rail line will directly connect the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and other ports to the Pithampur Auto Cluster, an industrial hub with 90 large units and 700 small and medium industries. This connection will make it easier to transport goods like agricultural products, fertilizers, containers, iron ore, steel, cement, and petroleum.Vaishnaw stated that the project will also offer direct connectivity to millet-producing districts in Madhya Pradesh and onion-producing districts in Maharashtra, thereby facilitating the distribution of these goods to the northern and southern parts of the country.

The project will also boost tourism by providing a shorter route between Western or South-Western India and Central India. This will improve access to tourist and religious sites, such as the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple in Ujjain.

It will boost freight traffic by 26 million tonnes a year, cut oil imports by 18 crore liters, and reduce CO2 emissions by 138 crore kilograms. All in All the Indore-Manmad rail line will improve connectivity, increase trade, and positively impact tourism.
