Earlier this month Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Phase II of the Metro rail extension connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase II of the Metro rail extension connecting the twin cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Modi flagged off the new route and traveled on the Metro from the Sector 1 station in Gandhinagar to GIFT City.


Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel joined the Prime Minister on his Metro journey, during which he engaged with students and other passengers.According to a government release, the first part of Phase II extends up to 21 kilometers, initially covering eight new stations and offering enhanced transportation services.

The project, developed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) in collaboration with both the state and Central governments, aims to enhance the metro network by linking major locations between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. This includes areas such as GNLU, PDEU, GIFT City, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva, Infocity, and Sector-1.

The new phase, extending from Motera to Sector 1 in Gandhinagar, will connect vital hubs like GIFT City, providing easier access for professionals, students, and tourists.The total cost of Phase II amounted to INR 5,384 crore, with funding obtained through loans from international agencies such as AFD and KfW.

The extended route significantly cuts down travel time between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. For example, commuters can now travel between APMC and GIFT City in under an hour for INR 35.Ahmedabad city now boasts two metro corridors. With this extension linking Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar, a major connectivity issue between the twin cities has been effectively addressed.
