Construction has commenced on the elevated extension of Pune Metro’s Vanaz–Chandni Chowk corridor, marking progress on a key link aimed at improving connectivity to the city’s western entry points. The 1.5 km stretch will include two stations—Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk—and is part of the broader Phase II expansion. Initial works such as soil testing, surveys and viaduct extension have begun, with execution planned in phases to minimise traffic disruption. The project is expected to enhance access for residential areas such as Kothrud and Bavdhan, while integrating with existing road infrastructure. The development reflects ongoing efforts to expand metro reach in high-density and rapidly growing urban corridors.
Construction has begun on the elevated extension of Pune Metro’s Vanaz–Chandni Chowk corridor, advancing a key infrastructure project aimed at strengthening connectivity towards the city’s western edge.
The work commenced earlier this week on the 1.5 km stretch, which forms part of the Phase II expansion of the metro network. The extension will include two stations—Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk—and is designed to improve access for residential and commercial areas in western Pune.
Initial groundwork activities, including soil testing and surveys, have already been undertaken in the Chandni Chowk area. Authorities have also extended the existing viaduct near Vanaz depot by a few metres, which will serve as the starting point for further construction towards Chandni Chowk.
The project is being executed in phases, with barricading and traffic management measures planned in coordination with local authorities to minimise disruption on key arterial roads. Officials indicated that efforts are being made to maintain maximum road space for vehicular movement during construction.
An agency has been appointed to construct the viaduct and stations, while additional infrastructure elements such as a proposed flyover near Kothrud Depot are planned alongside the metro alignment to address traffic congestion in the area.
The extension is part of the broader Pune Metro Phase II programme, which includes multiple corridors aimed at expanding the network across emerging residential and commercial zones. The Vanaz–Chandni Chowk segment is intended to connect densely populated localities such as Kothrud and Bavdhan, which currently rely heavily on road-based transport.
A foot overbridge is also being planned at Chandni Chowk to facilitate safe pedestrian access from the highway to the metro station, reflecting integration with surrounding transport infrastructure.
The extension is expected to play a role in easing traffic congestion on key routes leading into Pune from the western corridor, where vehicular movement has increased significantly in recent years due to urban expansion.
The Pune Metro network currently operates two lines, with further extensions under development to improve last-mile connectivity and expand coverage across the metropolitan region.
Officials have indicated that the ongoing expansion is aimed at increasing public transport share and reducing dependence on private vehicles, particularly in high-density urban corridors.
The commencement of construction marks a transition from planning to execution for this segment, with further phases of work expected to progress as part of the city’s broader metro expansion roadmap.
