The Leela Palaces Hotels and Resorts has announced the acquisition of an ultra-luxury resort in Coorg, expanding its presence in South India's leisure hospitality segment. The property, to be developed as The Leela Coorg Forest Sanctuary, is expected to open later this year and is located within the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats region. With proximity to key urban centres such as Bengaluru and Mangaluru, the project is positioned to attract high-end domestic and international travellers. The acquisition aligns with the company's strategy of investing in culturally and environmentally significant destinations while strengthening its diversified portfolio across India's established and emerging luxury tourism markets.
The Leela Palaces Hotels and Resorts has expanded its hospitality portfolio with the acquisition of an ultra-luxury resort in Coorg, reinforcing its focus on destination-led growth in India's leisure segment.
The upcoming property, to be known as The Leela Coorg Forest Sanctuary, is scheduled to open later this year. The development marks the company's entry into Coorg, a region known for its natural landscape and tourism appeal, characterised by coffee plantations, forested hills, and waterfalls within the Western Ghats.
Strategically located with access to key urban centres such as Bengaluru and Mangaluru, the resort is expected to cater to both domestic and international travellers seeking high-end leisure experiences. The region's established tourism ecosystem and connectivity make it a suitable addition to the brand's expanding footprint.
Anuraag Bhatnagar indicated that the company's investment approach focuses on destinations with strong cultural and ecological significance. He noted that the addition of Coorg strengthens the brand's presence in South India while supporting its strategy of building a diversified portfolio across key hospitality markets.
With this acquisition, The Leela's global portfolio now comprises 15 properties across 13 cities, including a mix of owned, managed, and franchised assets. The company currently operates seven owned hotels, seven managed properties, and one franchised asset, reflecting a hybrid growth model within the luxury hospitality segment.
The expansion into Coorg aligns with a broader trend of hospitality operators targeting experiential and nature-based destinations, where demand for premium accommodation has been rising. Such locations offer opportunities for brands to differentiate through curated experiences, wellness offerings, and destination-driven stays.
The Leela's entry into Coorg also indicates increasing investor confidence in India's high-end leisure market, particularly in regions with established tourism potential and environmental appeal. Developments in such areas often require a balanced approach to design and construction, given the ecological sensitivity of locations within the Western Ghats.
The acquisition further strengthens the company's positioning in the luxury hospitality segment, where competition has intensified with both domestic and international brands expanding their presence across key leisure and urban destinations.
As demand for premium travel experiences continues to grow, especially in nature-centric locations, investments in destinations like Coorg are expected to play a significant role in shaping the next phase of growth in India's hospitality real estate sector.
