The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has approved a proposal to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at major road junctions, municipal parking spaces and other high-footfall locations across the city. The decision was taken during a recent municipal council meeting chaired by Mayor Rayana Bhagya Lakshmi, with civic officials stating that the initiative aims to support the growing adoption of electric mobility in Vijayawada. The project will identify suitable locations across the city where EV charging infrastructure can be installed to serve private vehicle owners, commercial fleets and public transport users. Civic officials stated that these locations were chosen to ensure accessibility for both private vehicle users and commercial operators who require reliable charging facilities during daily operations.
Municipal authorities indicated that the exact sites for the charging stations will be finalised after technical evaluation and feasibility assessments. The planning process will consider factors such as traffic movement, availability of municipal land, power supply infrastructure and proximity to high-demand transport corridors within the city.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort by the city administration to strengthen infrastructure required for electric mobility. Officials noted that expanding charging networks is essential to support the gradual shift toward electric vehicles, which are expected to increase in number as state and national policies encourage cleaner transport systems.
Authorities also indicated that the development of charging infrastructure will be aligned with several government programmes that promote sustainable urban transport. These include the Smart Cities Mission, the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), and the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme, which support infrastructure investments aimed at reducing vehicular emissions and encouraging cleaner mobility.
Officials added that municipal parking spaces are being considered as important locations for EV charging stations because they allow vehicles to remain parked while charging. This approach can improve convenience for users and reduce pressure on roadside charging infrastructure in busy commercial districts.
The proposal was among several issues discussed during the municipal council meeting, which reviewed a range of urban development matters including civic infrastructure, sanitation and public services. Municipal representatives also raised concerns related to the maintenance of public facilities and other local administrative issues during the session.
The establishment of EV charging stations in Vijayawada reflects a wider shift among Indian cities toward supporting electric mobility through urban infrastructure planning. By developing publicly accessible charging points at strategic locations, the municipal corporation aims to facilitate the use of electric vehicles within the city while supporting broader environmental and transport policy objectives.
