Synopsis

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has recorded its highest property tax collection so far, reaching INR 272 crore in the current financial year. The amount has already crossed the civic body's annual target of INR 270 crore, marking a record in the corporation's 43-year history. Officials expect the collection to rise further before the financial year ends through ongoing recovery efforts. The increase has been supported by stricter enforcement against defaulters, expansion of the tax base and incentives for timely payments. Around 30,000 additional properties were also brought under the tax net during the year.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has achieved a record property tax collection of INR 272 crore in the ongoing financial year. The figure has already crossed the civic body's annual target of INR 270 crore and marks the highest property tax revenue recorded since the municipal corporation was formed more than four decades ago.

Officials from the civic administration stated that the total collection could increase further before the financial year ends. According to internal estimates, the civic body expects an additional INR 10-15 crore to be collected in the remaining period through continued recovery drives and payments from pending property tax accounts.

Property tax is one of the key sources of revenue for municipal bodies and is used to fund civic infrastructure, public services and urban development works. For NMC, the improved collection has been linked to stronger enforcement measures, increased monitoring of tax payments and better identification of properties that were previously outside the tax net.

During the current financial year, the civic administration expanded the tax base by adding nearly 30,000 new properties to the property tax assessment system. With these additions, the total number of taxable properties in Nashik has crossed six lakh. Officials believe that expanding the tax database has helped increase overall revenue and reduce gaps in tax coverage.

Earlier in the year, the municipal corporation had also launched special recovery drives targeting property tax defaulters. Notices were issued to several property owners with pending dues, particularly those with outstanding amounts exceeding INR 1 lakh. The move was aimed at improving compliance and ensuring that long-pending arrears were cleared.

In addition to enforcement measures, the civic body introduced incentives to encourage timely payment of property taxes. Rebates were offered to property owners who paid their taxes early, while online payment facilities were promoted to make the process easier for taxpayers. These steps helped improve participation and resulted in faster recovery of dues.

Initial trends during the financial year had already indicated steady growth in collections. Within the first few months of the fiscal year, the civic body had managed to collect more than INR 111 crore, which accounted for around 41 percent of its annual target at that stage. The consistent pace of payments in the following months helped the corporation surpass the full-year target.

The civic administration had also earlier implemented an amnesty scheme to encourage settlement of pending tax arrears. Under the scheme, penalties on old dues were partially waived, allowing property owners to clear outstanding payments. The initiative helped recover a significant portion of previously unpaid taxes and improved the overall revenue position of the civic body.

Municipal officials indicated that continued monitoring of property records, identification of unassessed properties and regular recovery drives have played a major role in achieving the record collection this year. The administration is expected to continue these measures in the coming financial years to further strengthen municipal revenues.
