Essar Future Energy Limited has announced plans to set up a large-scale bio-fuel complex in Gujarat's Devbhumi Dwarka district with a proposed investment of INR 5,100 crore. The project, formalised through a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat government, is expected to generate around 350 direct jobs and commence operations by 2029. Designed as a special economic zone (SEZ) unit, the facility will have an initial feedstock processing capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum. The bio-fuel complex will focus on providing clean fuel solutions for hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation, shipping, and road transport, strengthening Gujarat's clean energy ecosystem and supporting India's broader energy transition goals.
Essar Future Energy Limited has unveiled plans to establish a large-scale bio-fuel complex in Gujarat's Devbhumi Dwarka district, marking a significant investment in India's clean energy landscape. The project entails a proposed capital outlay of INR 5,100 crore and represents a major step towards strengthening the state's bio-energy and alternative fuels ecosystem.
The company has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat government for the development of the project. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate approximately 350 direct employment opportunities, contributing to local economic development and skill creation in the region. Commercial operations are targeted to begin by 2029.
Under the proposed plan, the bio-fuel complex will have an initial feedstock processing capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum. The project will be developed as a special economic zone unit, providing a dedicated platform for large-scale production and processing of bio-fuels. The facility will focus on decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors by offering cleaner fuel alternatives for aviation, shipping, and road transport, areas where reducing carbon emissions has traditionally been challenging.
The project aligns with Gujarat's broader focus on building a green energy ecosystem aimed at achieving energy independence and supporting long-term sustainable growth. By investing in advanced bio-fuel infrastructure, Essar Future Energy aims to support India's transition towards low-carbon energy solutions while enhancing the state's position as a hub for clean fuels and renewable energy initiatives.
Company leadership highlighted that the initiative reflects a strategic partnership with the state government to develop future-ready energy solutions that balance industrial growth with environmental responsibility. The project is also expected to play a role in strengthening regional infrastructure, attracting allied industries, and fostering innovation in bio-energy technologies.
With this investment, Essar Future Energy reinforces its commitment to supporting India's energy transition goals and contributing to the development of scalable, sustainable fuel alternatives. The proposed bio-fuel complex is positioned to become a key component of Gujarat's clean energy framework while supporting national objectives around decarbonisation and long-term economic resilience.
