Synopsis

Shillong is undergoing a transformative phase with infrastructure projects exceeding INR 3,000 crore. Key initiatives include the INR 1,188 crore New Meghalaya Secretariat, the INR 217 crore integrated solid waste management facility, and the INR 70 crore Living Root Bridges Experience Centre. The city is also focusing on eco-tourism with the development of five circuits under the Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project and enhancing urban mobility through the Shillong-Dawki four-lane highway. These projects aim to boost connectivity, promote sustainable tourism, and preserve cultural heritage, positioning Shillong as a modern urban center.

The New Meghalaya Secretariat at Umsawli, with a budget of INR 1,188 crore is a transforming infrastructure project. This project aims to decongest the city center and establish a modern administrative hub, incorporating sustainable design elements and cultural motifs. The Secretariat is expected to be completed by mid-2027.

Complementing this is the development of the Shillong-Dawki four-lane highway, a critical project to improve connectivity within the state and with neighboring regions. The first phase, covering 11.6 km from Rilbong to Mylliem Marbaniang, is targeted for completion by October 2025.

Under the Smart City Mission, Shillong is implementing several projects, including the INR 217 crore integrated solid waste management facility in East Khasi Hills, redevelopment of Laitumkhrah Market, and the construction of a commercial complex in Polo. These initiatives aim to enhance urban infrastructure and service delivery.

In a bid to promote eco-tourism, the state government is developing five ecotourism circuits under the Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project. This includes the construction of nine tourism attractions, 323 accommodation units, 114 km of roads and bridges, and the Shillong Peak ropeway. The project is expected to generate employment for over 1,400 people during its operational phase.

Preserving cultural heritage is also a priority, with the establishment of the INR 70 crore Living Root Bridges Experience Centre at Wahlyngkhat village. This center aims to showcase the unique living root bridges and promote sustainable tourism. Additionally, the INR 15 crore Seng Khasi Indigenous Cultural Centre at Mawkhar is being developed to serve as a hub for preserving and celebrating Khasi traditions.

These comprehensive infrastructure developments underscore Shillong's commitment to evolving into a modern urban center. By enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainable tourism, and preserving cultural heritage, the city is poised to offer a higher quality of life to its residents and attract investment for sustained economic growth.
