The state government has appointed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as the New Town Development Authority (NTDA) for the proposed 'Third Mumbai,' located around the Navi Mumbai end of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). The MMRDA is now tasked with preparing planning proposals and development regulations for this 324 sq km area, which includes 124 villages. This strategic move aims to position Third Mumbai as a sustainable greenfield business hub, fostering job creation and economic growth. With smart city amenities and integrated residential areas, this development aligns with the state's commitment to improving urban living and driving economic expansion.
In a significant move earlier this month, coinciding with the enforcement of the code of conduct, the state government has appointed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as the New Town Development Authority (NTDA) for the proposed 'Third Mumbai.' This initiative focuses on the area surrounding the Navi Mumbai end of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), marking a pivotal step in urban development.
According to the recent Government Resolution (GR), the MMRDA is now responsible for preparing and publishing detailed Planning Proposals and Development Control and Promotion Regulations for the designated 'Notified Area.' The authority has also been empowered to acquire land within this area, with directives to allocate the necessary budgetary provisions for the land acquisition process. This strategic move aims to position the Third Mumbai as a catalyst for economic growth, harnessing the anticipated benefits from the newly inaugurated MTHL.
The area designated as Third Mumbai spans approximately 324 sq km and consists of 124 villages. Among these, 80 villages fall within the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA), while 33 are included in the Khopta New Town Notified Area. Additionally, 2 villages are part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Plan, and 9 are under the Raigad Regional Plan. This diverse landscape underscores the potential for a comprehensive and cohesive urban development initiative.
The MMRDA envisions this new city as a sustainable and liveable greenfield business hub, equipped with smart city amenities. The plans include mixed-use spaces and integrated residential areas, all aimed at fostering job creation and economic growth in the Mumbai region.
